Nestled in the city's southwest corner, the Kessler Mountain Regional Park spans approximately 620 acres both on and around Kessler Mountain. The mountain was named for the family that purchased land on its peak in the mid-1800s. They built a home and a wine cellar and established a vineyard. Today, the varied terrain includes rolling hills and open meadows. Two streams provide a water source for wildlife, and the property is preserved as a natural playground. Kessler is popular among mountain bikers as it features an expert system of trails. They span about 13 miles and range from easy to very difficult.
Stretching nearly 1,400 acres, Lake Sequoyah is a picturesque destination, especially when the trees are in their fall glory. The lake was originally used as a water supply reservoir. Today, it's where locals gather for fishing, boating, and hiking fun. Lake Sequoyah is also noted for its plentiful bird population. Species that may be spotted include bald eagles, belted kingfishers, and great blue herons.
When Gulley Park opened, it quickly became one of the most used parks in Fayetteville. The land was bought from the Gulley family in 1988, and it features the Niokaska Creek and other natural features. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, sand volleyball, and exploring a 1.5-mile mixed-use trail. The park is also known for its annual concert series featuring local and regional talent.
